Let me finish tonight with the stranger. I'm talking about the man Republicans are planning to nominate for president of the United States.

When you examine the new poll numbers compiled by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, you come up with an amazing fact, a cold reality of this political season. It's that less than one in six American voters — about 15 percent — wants to see Mitt Romney president. The rest intend to vote, not on Romney's merits, but on what they think of President Obama. They'll vote either for the President or against him. Romney is simply the only option.
What does this say about the kind of campaign Romney has waged, is waging? People know nothing about the person himself, nor is he likely to make himself better known. The way it is, few people knowing much about him is the way he wants it. He wants the spotlight on Obama, not him.
It seems to be working so far. Romney's right there in a fairly tight match-up with an incumbent president. Most people will vote for him not on the fact of who he is, but on the fact of who his rival is.
Will this last? Will some Americans walk right into the voting booth intent on voting for a guy still hiding under the covers? Will they entrust this country to a candidate who has made himself the man behind the curtain?
Nixon did this in 1968. It worked then because the country was unable to vote for the riot-torn Democrats, unable to back a party stuck in Vietnam, stuck in the "fight" over Vietnam.
I think we live in more hopeful times. We want the best president we can get, not the one who's not the other, not the one who hides because he thinks who he is works against him.

Same reason I voted for Reagen over Carter I will not feel guilty for being an American.
No one could condemn President Kennedy for not being Harry Truman.Yet we believe that among those who had confidence in him there was ROOM for men who APPRASE his ACTIONS and his words with the same UNEMOTIONAL confidence he exhibits in facing his TASKS."Life in 1961 will not be Easy"he said"wishing it,predicting it,even asking for it,to the American PEOPLE.@
In my state getting a state ID requires a trip to a Drivers' License Bureau, filling out a form (with small print) and coughing up $11.00. Doesn't this qualify as a poll tax? There are people who cannot stand in the line and who definitely cannot see well enough to fill out a long form and supply all the information.
Republicans (and they are all sticking together) are determined to undermine our democracy to benefit a few and they don't care how they do it. With SCOTUS in their pocket they are making great progress.
Judith, according to the U.S. Supreme Court, "No." This action you question does not qualify as a poll tax. I have supplied a link to a 2008 Supreme Court opinion on Indiana voter ID law (below). Please note the assenting op (page 25) and the dissenting op of Justice Souter (page 32).
I must say BOTH these men make valid arguments for and against Indiana's voter ID law. Frankly, I can see why a majority court vote was needed to move forward on this. (One thing: The other courts (page 2) writings make good reading too-if you have the time.)

Furthermore, in the above opinion: The Federal Voter Rights Act 1965 has been "enhanced" by the National Voter Registration Act of 1993:

You are quoting an extremely partisan right wing court. Lets try to remember the Republicans have been following the philosophy and practices of conservative guru Paul Weyrich, who back in 1980 mocked the idea of democracy and good government as “goo-goo syndrome,” and bluntly stated: “As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down,” for years now.
Keeping the voting populace down — among target groups, of course (African-Americans, students, Native Americans, Hispanics, the poor, the young, the elderly) — has been core Republican strategy throughout the Rove-Bush era, from the bogus ex-felon purges of voting rolls in 2000 that disenfranchised thousands of mostly African-Americans in the South and gave Florida to George W. Bush, to a dizzying array of dirty tricks in 2004 (check out “Fooled Again” by Mark Crispin Miller or the documentaries “Uncounted” and the just-completed “Stealing America Vote by Vote”).
These new anti-voter laws or "anti-faud" laws are just a continuation of the policies above. Simply suggest to a Republican that voting should be a legal requirement of all citizens and see how they react. One would think that in a democracy everyone would be in favor of 100% or near 100% participation but that is not the case where the Republicans are concerned. They only want participation from their side and their side ONLY, as is clearly seen from their representatives in Congress who refuse to work in any way with representatives from the other side of the aisle. When they get a majority they call it a mandate, when the other side gets a majority they set record numbers of filibusters and whine about not getting their amendments through. Mandates don't count for the opposing side.
I fully agree with your points! I understand and am deeply offended that republicans take license to use "neutral" law as a tool for the republican party.
In a post above, I did read and referenced Justice Souter's dissent. (I did not quote him above due to lengthiness.) For me, on this case per se, the conservatives made a forceful evidential argument, and by having the votes to succeed...prevailed (for now.) :)
When you consider you have a whole network, a criminal network at that, that calls itself a "news" network yet one that essentially never quotes any facts always prevaricates, always preaches hatred against 60% of it's fellow Americans, what do you expect?
How many of Obama's speeches has Fox shown? Other than original acceptance speech? Zero. Kudos to MSNBC who always shows not only the majority of Obama's speeches but also the majority of Romney's speeches. That is the difference between the two networks. The media loves to claim that Fox and MSNBC are polar opposites. One is left and one is right but that ain't true. News Corp doesn't use facts and doesn't state both sides equally. However, MSNBC does and the right wing HATES to see the left side represented AT ALL thus they call MSNBC extreme!
This is why you see this extreme hatred of your fellow Americans and why we have seen it for 30 years. One of the reasons I am so confrontational on this website is because I am sick and tired of the unanswered extremism from the other side. It has to be answered and thrown back into their face or they will never stop and/or the left side will never take control back from them! The media has been saying over and over for years, "why are the Dems such wimps?" Well Dems it's time to get tough with these inaccurate hate mongers!
I agree with you.
I have not heard a single legitimate argument against voter I.D.s being required. An I.D. may cost $11 ( in many states they are free), but they are not good for 1 election. You do not have to get a new one every time you vote. There are years between eletions to work out the time to get to where you need to go to get one.
You need an ID to open a bank account, to sell or buy a house, to cash a check, to use a credit card ( in some cases) and to do many other every day things. Why is it an undo burden to get one to vote?
In my state the government mails you a laminated voter id card. It's much nicer and contains much more information than a drivers license. So why have we required the people to present a drivers license in ADDITION to this card?
Tell me why should a college student who doesn't own a car or a elderly person living in a home who has voted for decades and served in the military for decades but cannot drive anymore, who cannot get to the DMV on their own, now be required to get to the DMV to get an additional ID to vote? It may be easy for you, in fact you need one anyway because you have a car and use it everyday so it doesn't matter to you at all, but for them it is a very big deal. They have to miss classes, and/or pay someone to take them to the DMV, some of these elderly homes do not allow them leave at all without nurse's or doctors. They have to vote in the lobbies.
So bright guy, it's swell to be white, middle class, Republican and have a car that you use everyday, but when you find yourself on a list that says you're not allowed to vote because you're an illegitimate Democrat, like the thousands of Dems that found themselves unable to vote in Florida and Ohio in 2002 and 2006 maybe you'd change your mind. Please understand, this is more about restricting Americans rights than preventing crime.
As to the above, the real fraud has been ELECTION fraud NOT VOTER FRAUD, voter machine fraud, miscounts and voter officials misreporting votes, NOT people pretending to be someone they're not and that's a fact. Everyone know's it and openly admit it. So why do our politicians (the Republicans) absolutely REFUSE to address those ELECTION FRAUD issues in ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM?
As always it's blame the working man but refuse to take any responsibility for their own serious malfeasance AT ALL. They refuse to fix the real problem that they have caused.
After reading the 2008 Supreme Court decison (linked above), I am of two hearts on this subject. It appears (clear) to me that something practical has to occur to move forward on this matter of voting.
IMO, the Supreme Court (though voting a conservative majority) makes a valid point, the 1965 voter rights act must be reconciled with the 1993 national voting act. There are Congressional requirements that ID and computerized systems be instituted and maintained by states.
Therefore, in my opinion, as long as the above is adjudicated for its "spirit' by the Courts, perhaps no violation of civil rights are occurring. Poor, elderly, people who have religious issues with photos, and disabled people must make a least effort to use the "franchise".
Again, these states already have voter ID cards. How many forms of ID are they going to require? Why are they only questioning the status of Dems? Further why are they addressing a problem that has an error of .0005%? That isn't a problem!
However ELECTION FRAUD is a serious problem! It has caused the wrong results of several elections now. Corporations refusing to release their fraudulent codes. Election officials miscounting and simply misreporting numbers and not being held accountable! These are the REAL problems! Our politicians REFUSE to enact REAL REFORM laws and instead distract us with B.S. laws that address false fraud of .0005% Give me a break! An error of .0005% is fantastic in any arena and I and anyone will always accept that error anytime and anywhere!
The WSJ has announced that News Corp is considering breaking up its entertainment division from its news division. Uh oh. Does this mean they're anticipating actual huge fines coming down from our government with regard to the investigation through the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the multiple crimes related the their media empire in the U.K.?
Methinks the writing is on the wall. Lets hope News Corp takes a major blow!
Mitt Romney really pisses me off. Not because hes a Moron, oh sorry Mormon, not that he out sourced US jobs and killed off companies. Not that he stole pensions, retirement plans and healthcare benefits along with 401k's promised to the workers either. The fact that Mitt Romney healthcare plan is the exact identical healthcare bill President Obama passed and he talks of repealing it doesn't even touch the surface of where my true anger lies for Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney pisses me off because hes a spoiled adult child who has houses all over the world, and who has had everything hes ever wanted in life and is now bored. The playground isn't big enough for this child to play in, nooooo, his yachts inside his bathtub don't excite him anymore. In-fact his La Jolla California mega mansion being built right now with a car elevator for all the cars he is tired of just isn't enough to keep him happy. The trips around the globe and the off shore accounts with tens of millions just isn't enough for him to play with. Nooooo, Mitt Romney wants to be president like a spoiled child in toys are us demands the most expensive toy. Not that he wants to run the country, or even has the qualifications to be President of the United States. Mitt Romney want to be president because he feels he is entitles to it because hes rich, and he is demanding it from the people squashing the competition with his money, solely because he can. Mitt Romney want to be President because he is bored and because he thinks he can buy it with all his money. Mitt Romney is a child who doesn't know , nor does he understand the meaning of the word "NO". Obviously no one has ever told Mitt Romney that ha can't have anything. Do we want a president who bought his way into office with no real goals , heart or purpose for any agenda? Mitt Romney would get into office then let leaders and companies around the globe delegate what he should do, because it is a known fact he knows nothing about politics.
