The Republicans could win this election just on the math. You could argue that if they can't make something of an 8-plus jobless rate and all the underemployment out there, they shouldn't even be in the running. The point is, and we can mostly agree on this across the spectrum, they shouldn't do some of the stuff they're doing on the eve of this convention, desperate or not.
Welfare cheats. Food stamps. The whole "birther" game is below a major political party, including and especially the party of Lincoln.
I don't know why Romney hooked up with Donald Trump, don't know why Trump himself is pushing the "birther" charge so hard.
There ought to be a conscience in this business. John McCain showed his last time. He refused to play the ethnic card, the "He's a Muslim" charge. And John McCain was losing when he refused to get down and dirty. Why's Romney, who's head-to-head now, and now faces a huge chance to pull ahead in his acceptance speech and in the three big primetime debates—why's he taking these shots at welfare people and telling knee-slappers about the "birther" sickness?
That's a question that needs an answer. More important, it's a question we shouldn't have to be asking after what this country's been through all these years.

Romney's Birth Certificate Comment followed by the complaint that President Obama is running a divisive campaign
Mister Romney either has made calculated comment, or he committed what is referred to in classical psychoanalysis as a parapraxis. A parapraxis, is an error in speech, memory, or physical action that is interpreted as occurring due to the interference of some unconscious ("dynamically repressed"), subdued wish, conflict, or train of thought. Such slips of the tongue often are presented as a "joke."
If his remark is calculated, he is engaging in divisive politics and joins the likes of Donald Trump and Orly Taitz, the dentist-lawyer who keeps filing all of that birther nonsense litigation, all of which keep getting thrown out of court and are commonly viewed as racially motivated. If his comment is a parapraxis it may be reflecting that he believes all of those racially motivated conspiracy theories.
My concern is that NBC reports that there are at least seven birthers scheduled to deliver remarks at the GOP convention, including Sherrif Joe Arpaio and therefore we can only conclude that Mister Romney's comment was calculated and it is he who is engaging in a divisive campaign, not President Obama.
Sadly, if Mister Romney's comment was a Freudian slip, which I think it is, it does not say much about his character and I'd be worried about him representing America on the world stage or at home where a large percentage of Americans are encompassed by that birther slur.

January 7, of this year at a Washington Fundraiser, Obama subtly played the race card, suggesting that Republican presidential candidates would deny people opportunity based on the color of their skin.
The phrase "no matter what you look like" is a clear reference to race. Obama is indicating that if he loses the election, opportunity for those who are a certain color or ethnicity will be denied. He completes the thought by pointing to the debates in New Hampshire, associating the Republican candidates with the possibility of racial or ethnic discrimination.

I just want to say thanks to Chris for not backing down to the R.N.C. chair on Morning Joe. Its been a long time since an intellectual person didnt cower down and keep quiet about obvious political tactics. I think that most intelligent people know that people who believe a certain way won"t come right out and say what they mean. They use code phrases and loaded words. What Chris did was call out the other side on the tactics they have been using and they where almost shocked that he did so. It was an honest, heartfelt argument that Chris was making and the other side wanted to recite talking points. I think Chris could have even went further than he did. When the RNC chair tried to demonize "ObamaCare" he could have said doesn't ObamaCare = RomneyCare so your just demonizing your own candidate. I could go on and on..ending wellfare to work , not true he was trying to help governor's, republican and democratic a like to find more efficient ways to get more people off welfare......... just like Romney did as Govrnor. Hypocrit in everyway. Romney will do anything, say anything, spend anything to get elected. When someone with the knowledge base to challenge the Romney camp people they cry foul. At least with Obama you have a good idea of who you are getting, Romney believes in whatever he thinks will get a victory. Unemployment is too high i agree. Consider how we got here. Bush overspent and under funded us into the brink. Obama is just doing his best to reverse the course, and all the republicans in the congress are doing there best to obstruct him. You truly are an idiot. When the POTUS took office as you said we were losing 750,000 to 800,000 jobs a month. The President was able to get the stimulus passed, something Republicans always believed in before this President, which stopped the Bush recession of '08. Thank god Obama managed to stop the Bush job crash and create the only economy in the world that actually started to recover.

Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy created a mere 80,000 new jobs in June, Obama declared it "a step in the right direction." His head economic adviser, Alan Krueger, boasted about how private-sector jobs have been growing for "28 straight months, for a total of 4.4 million payroll jobs during that period."
But you don't have to look very hard to see that the baby steps the economy is taking have left workers worse off than they were back in June 2009. Examples:
Labor force participation. The share of people working or actively looking for a job fell nearly two full percentage points during Obama's "recovery." Put another way, the ranks of those who've abandoned the job market have swollen by more than 7 million.
Long-term unemployed. A million more workers have been unemployed 27 weeks or longer than there were at the recession's end. That's hardly the norm for economic recoveries. The Reagan recovery had cut the number of long-term jobless in half by this point.
Median weeks unemployed. Meanwhile, the median length of unemployment is higher today than in June 2009 — 19.8 weeks today compared with 17.2.
New entrants. Joblessness among new entrants to the workforce is 300,000 higher than three years ago.
Unemployment rate. And even though the current unemployment rate of 8.3% is officially below the level three years ago, that's because millions have given up looking for work and so aren't counted as unemployed. Romney told a joke - he's the bad guy for doing so, even though Obama has joked about the topic for years now. His policy has failed, the debt has soared, and rather than focus on his accomplishments as president (as he has none), he launches a smear campaign that's been dirtier than I've ever witnessed in my 30 years. We need someone to take charge of this nation and rebuild it under the principles that made us strong in the first place - not a modern day Robin Hood and his merry band of thieves. That said, hopefully this time around people will keep a check on our government and hold it accountable - we've just seen what happens when our politicians think they can do whatever they want without consequence.
