As the unraveling of the Arab Spring threatens President Obama's foreign policy record, the president will address the United Nations General Assembly and challenge the world to confront the roots of Muslim rage.
David Brooks takes another whack at Mitt Romney and the whole Republican party, making the case that by rewarding ignorance, they are on the verge of becoming irrelevant. Frank Bruni writes about the mortification of Mitt Romney. And the paper's lead editorial argues that Romney is pushing voters away by not providing intelligent and specific answers.
Politico's Roger Simon picks up on an amazing - and telling - quote from the former head of the Iowa Republican party, who says that Paul Ryan needs to "wash the stench" of Mitt Romney off of him if he hopes to run for national office in the future.
Is President Obama slipping among veterans?
Did Mitt Romney really suggest that airplanes should have windows that open?

Interesting example of proud to be stupid democrats are mocking Romney on creative idea. Let's take a closer look at one specific case. Let presume that plane is at low attitude and passengers cabin is heavy life threatening smocked and oxygen masks are not working. Is in this specific case better to have option to depressurize cabin instead killing all passengers? I don't know for sure is it the legitimate way to thinking, maybe danger of fire is increasing if free air inside cabin; who will make decision to open cabin (obviously not passengers). But it is real option to save lives in some cases. But Dems instead of thinking have political fun.
Half of country have less than average IQ. Dems will be offended by definition of the term average.
Yeah Leo, Romney could make screen door's on all aircraft and submarine's mandatory.
Proud to be stupid Leo should consider an idiot Republican, or a child who decides to open a window in Leo and Romney's aircraft at 35,000 feet going 500 miles an hour +.
Go ahead Leo try it.
I'll just continue to fly in USA's "safe, sane and intelligent" airlines. Let Leo and Mittens open their new "Idiots fly for $50,000 and can open their windows" airline. Ha Ha Ha!
Sed my husband, when he stopped laughing, said it was Rick Perry who advised Romney. He does wish them all a happy landing as they get sucked out of the plane at 35,000 ft. altitude.
At least Leo has provided a window to deep scientifically based reasoning from the party that does not believe in science.....or has never noticed the attendants mention of cabin pressure and those pesky oxygen masks.
Black humor of haters.
Judgement of hypocrite.
They are already on life support when you look at everybody under 65 who look at these bloated egotistical fools and their greed exemplified in Romney; the switch from Country First to Me First like the toddlers, that they are declaring I did it all by myself, like toilet training, yes you are a big boy now.
Bill Clinton on Morning Joe said it all, we are going to come together and get something done after Obama wins this election. Country first is the winning attitude and there is no longer any need to deny a second term since it will be the second term. Frankly we are fed up with this borish behavior and the failure to see how working together will bring more prosperity for all. All the old white obsolete men will be forced to find their retirement home and rock away seething with resentment that they just can't have their country back. Women who tend to think more like Obama and will fix things to benefit more than themselves since we nurture plus minorities who have not flourished under this closed male system are rising up to create a more balanced outlook... we think more like the "old" conservatives of social justice and community as David Brooks pointed out the failing of the Corporate think Republican Party... boring.
Do we need more "intelligent" people? Smart people built the space shuttle that exploded and the Titanic that sank. Or do we need more creative people to solve the problems of this world? If you think Clinton is on to something, then we need to use our brains to see the problems and then our hearts to be inspired to create a new way of helping raise up all boats. MItt lacks this connection, the 18" or so inches between the head and the heart which is required to make things work for the common good. I notice that in his "power point on windows in airplanes", where were his emotions about his wife's life being in danger? MIA
Thank you Carol!!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU!
The Arab Spring, Democracy and Foreign Affairs…
I am guessing that we all remember that the The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), lasted eight years and The American Civil War (1861–1865) four years and Reconstruction until 1877. That my friends are a total of 102 years…that is how long it took to “STABALIZE” the American Democracy; it was UGLY, VIOLENT and incredible amounts of BLOOD were SHED we almost lost the UNION. In our social media, Twitter obsessed, Facebook loving, smart phone wielding 21st Century the Press and the Republicans would have us BELIEVE that President Obama can solve the issues of the Middle East in a year a half….ARE YOU KIDDING ME? GROW UP PRESS!
Come on, if we are going to have a conversation on MSNBC give your viewers some credit and speak to us intelligently….it is insulting our intelligence to give ANY credence to the Republican Talking Points….we know that Democracy takes a long time…it took us 102 years and we are still working on it…Voter Suppression is going on in 2012 in the oldest continuing Democracy on Earth. How do you think that looks to the rest of the world GOP?
As for Iran, Diplomacy first…Prime Minister Netanyahu does not have the full support of his Minister of Defense, Ehud Barak or the Israeli People and we are WAR WEARY…Romney will not pull us into a WAR…We have already lost American lives and treasure, more than a TRILLION dollars in Iraq and Afghanistan…we are broke so I am told?
President Obama and Hilary Clinton have NOTHING to prove to us out here in the real world. President Obama has already proven himself. It is Mitt Romney that needs to be asked the difficult questions, and he needs to answer them fully and directly. The Press is getting lazy and is becoming as frustrating to the American People as the Romney Campaign. The man doesn’t answer any questions and you all just move on. Then you use the Republican Talking Points on the POTUS.
We are in the middle of a VERY IMPORTANT election, with many many DOMESTIC ISSUES that will affect OUR lives out here in America; Hilary Clinton is quite capable of handling Foreign Officials this one time, I am sure they are adults and will understand that President Obama will be talking to his CITIZENS on the VIEW…GET OVER IT!
As for the “BUMP IN THE ROAD” strategy, that is a shallow and vacuous statement from a shallow and vacuous candidate, who is in NO PLACE to criticize the POTUS. This man Mitt Romney who insulted England, insulted the Palestinians and Mexicans by calling their cultures inferior, and neglecting to even mention our AMERICAN TROOPS in harms way….GIVE ME A BREAK!
Seems to me that President Obama’s speech to the United Nations was well received and respected…I watched it....
Now respect us with REAL information not Republican Talking Points that are BORING! ZZZZZZZZZ
how can you vote for a 4 time draft dodger that wants to send other peoples kids off to war.
What was this claim by Mittens on "60 Minutes" that half of his income was already taxed once at the corporate level? Another Mittens lie!
Bain is one of those Republican "small businesses" specifically a "partnership" not a corporation and he does not get taxed at the corporate level.
Mitt and Ryan are just plain liars.
I you purchase stock in a public corporation, you purchase an owership share of its current and future expected profits. And when the corporation pays out a dividend to its stock holders, that come out of past and present profits, which are taxed at a 35% rate by the Federal Government. Then when you add on the 15% dividend tax rate, you can see that 50% of a corporations past and present profits are being taxed by the Federal Government. Obama wants to raise those rates to 40% for corporation profits, and 2o percent or more for dividends. BTW, the global average for tax rates on corporate profits by governments is about 25%, and even Bill Clinton has expressed lately that those corporated tax rates ought to be dropped to that level, rather than raised as Obama plans, for the US to remain globally competitive.
Same story on capital gains. The sale of shares of stock in a corporation that brings a profit over what they were originally purchased for is a capital gain, and is presently being taxed at a 15% rate. But the sale price of a share of stock is a measure of the present and future profits earning potential of the corporation, and those profits are taxed and will be taxed at a 35% rate, and if Obama had his way, a 40% rate in the future. And if you add the raise he plans to 20% for capital gains taxes rates, that means over 60% of a corporations profits, both present and future that are represented by its share price would be taxed.
Lesson in economics 101, sedwinmars!
Thanks for telling me what I already know, Keith. Now back to economics 101. Bain capital is not a corporation as you pointed out and as I mentioned. Bain capitals profits were not taxed twice because Bain capital is a partnership.
Keeping in mind that this is confusing because Mitt has income that has come from investments, but has also come from earnings from BAIN Capital. I was pointing out the hypocrisy regarding the Republican "small business" argument model and the fact that Mitts gazillions were originally earned by being taxed only once.
Further, Mitt himself, even as an investor pays taxes on the dividends only whereas the corporation pays the initial taxes. Since Mitt has no direct involvement in the corporations he has invested in he is not paying those initial taxes. If you want to make the argument that he does indirectly then you have to make the argument that the employees, and the customers also pay those initial taxes indirectly as well.
Capital gains should be taxed at a higher rate. Even Ronald Reagan agreed with this arguing it was immoral and economically unsound not to do so. He then raised the rate to 28%. It doesn't matter people will still invest because they will still want to make a profit.
Economics 101 Keith
/sound of popcorn crunching
Lets break it down further. In the 50's 60's and 70's rates were as high as 91% and did this kill investments? Absolutely not! Economic growth was fantastic! Why because if the rich can earn a profit, even if they have to pay high taxes they will!
Further, high rates, if anything cause top earners to reduce their salaries, (to keep from paying high taxes) and reinvest that money into their businesses in the form of jobs, R&D and expansion. It also keeps all that money out of the economy and keeps it from huge investments in real estate etc creating the bubble-burst type economies we've seen due to the supply-side low tax scams.
Again Econ 101 Keith
It is so hard to believe that so many repub/repukes still do not believe the POTUS is a Christian or that he was born in Hawaii. What is wrong with that thinking is that funnel vision of those that just never try to look for truths much less believe them.
So very sad to see this in the year 2012. The repub/repukes are trying so hard to go backwards. Thank goodness for our President and with him we will go forward.
There are always people who stop thinkiing when they hear what they want to hear. Writing them off repeats Mr. Romney's mistake with the 47% but if they choose to stay behind there is nothing we can do to stop them.
Back in the day when Obama was born, the airlines restricted flying for pregnant women. Maybe the birthers thought she got a private jet to Africa where the rules did not apply?
Most likely the Obama is a Christian deniers are Christians themselves and are so busy not judging as Jesus commanded that they forgot about J. Wright....and that uproar of "sedition by the haters of America".
I think the definition of wicked in the bible is to be under a spell and frankly to believe as the Republicans do in contrast to either thinking or finding any facts, they are under a spell cast by those old spell makers at Fox Noise.
Carol, birthers do behave as those bewitched don't they. They are becoming reprobates in the mind. All hail the power of Fox News which wields the power of emotional entrapment against republicans. Birthers are entangled! Spin and spun!!
On November 6th we will learn, one way or the other, how deep our frenemies enchantment has become. Should President Obama continue to lead, will Fox's noise and Ory Taitz have their hold over republicans shattered? Will Fox News cast a new kind of spell against the minds of viewers. Ah, Fox! Masters of republican spellbinding!
O Wicked Republicans! Wake up out of your slumber. Cast off the energy which negates you; there is still time. The glaciers have not all melted yet. :-()
IT was even POLITICAL then, and all started in 50's and 60's,when"WHITE MAN"believed that there is NO-NON"WAY"or anyway AN a"WHITE WOMAN"could"PICKED"thy own"CHOICE"of"BEDROOM ZEBRA"unless it was a"RAPE."@
Calbab I am wondering when the vodoo dolls come out and some sort of incantations will replace the normal histrionics.. or maybe their heads will just explode at Fox and Friends, like the Martians in Mars attacks.... we better get a truck load of country music to stop the insanity and fear.
Mathews show tonight looked like a rerun from the past.
To begin, he and his guest commentators were trumpeting up the Clinton bounce in the polls from the 1st week of September, which lasted all of one week, and is gone now, as the race is again tied 47% Obama, 46% Romney.
Then he walked down Memory Lane to a Jack Kennedy presidency (his other rapist, secual harrasing, and serial adulterer favorite President other than Clinton, who obvioulsy modeled his own self on Jack the Zipper in more ways than one).
And wound up with a ringing endorsement for Hillary Clinton for 2016, citing her 70% favoribility rating, which seems to be more a factor of the discontent and buyers remorse that Democrats and Independents have for the failed Presidency of her opponent in the 2008 Party nomination battle Barrack Obama, and that as Secretary of State she has had to sit out the policitical activity and discussions over tha past 4 years.
Amazing that when even Chris Jansin and Andrea Mitchell were taking a hard and disapproving look at Obama's refusal to meet with any world leaders in his whirlwind trip to NYC away from the campaign trail (well, partially) to appear before the UN where he again couldn't bring himself to condem fundamentalist Islamic terrorism even after the assination by jihadists of our Ambassador and three of his colleagues in a poorly protected consulate in Benghazi, Libya on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, and then rushing off to tape an appearance on the View (his partial campaign appearance, of course). And again, on both the View and before the UN, Obama tried to defuse any criticism of his policy of withdrawal from the strong economic, diplomatic, and military involvement in the Muslim World and lack of provision of proper secutiry arrangements for our personnel abroad and embassies and consulated where that terrorism runs rampant and is harbored, by falsely linking the planned and well executed Al Qaeda associated (oh, but haven't they been defeated with the killing of Osama Bin Laden as we have been told repeatedly?) terrorist attack on 9/11/2012 once again to a video trailer that has been out on YouTube without incident or for over three months, an obviouxsly thoroughly debunked argument by the facts, as viewers of CNN and Fox News know. But not a word of this on the Mathews show that has that incredible misnomer of Hardball when it comes to anything Obama related!
No wonder that the most recent Gallup polls show that Obama has dropped 12 points in his support for his handling of foreign affairs, from 53% to only 41%.
Bring on the debates. It ain't only the rotten economic policies of this Administration that is coming under the voters hard scrutiny in the next asix weeks left before the election. And Bill Clinton, "Obama and the Congress should extend the tax cuts a year", and "Obama should have taken the opportunity to meet with world leaders instead of going on the View". So that supporting ship has obviously sailed, Mathews.
Wow you can sight a single poll! How about the National Journal Poll? That has Obama ahead by 7. The Pew poll has Obama ahead by 8. All nine national polls have Obama ahead. The overall average is Obama ahead by 3.8.
Chris Jansen and Andrea Mitchell are right wing journalists and their opinions coupled with you long winded rhetoric and repeated talking points mean nothing.
Our economy has been doing great compared to the rest of the world after the Bush crash of '08 despite the obstructionist efforts of the Republican Congress. They have proved by filibustering 20 jobs bills in a row and by firing 650,000 government employees that they have no interest in making this economy better or in creating any certainty in the corporate world.
The Republicans have lost all credibility and I'm not just talking about Romney, the whole Republican party have proven they will only keep enacting failed policies over and over again until this country crumbles into complete failure.
Obama and the Democrats are the only party offering any new ideas and any sign of economic improvement.
(slipped outside for an order of nachos and a big iced tea)
Carry on Sed, and you might try to explain Electoral math to Grandpa Fuzz as well (be careful of "cite vs. sight" however); he's flunked my remedial classes on that one twice over on Lawrence's blog. As for history, I'm thinking of calling in a specialist. Doesn't have a clue about the numbers of Native Americans out here in the Wild West, and he couldn't be bothered to do some elementary research on the death of Sir Walter Raleigh...
Don't ask what he said about airplane windows...
Yeah I've noticed the more long winded wing nuts have shown up now that early voting has actually started. I get the feeling these guys actually sit through the full four hours of the Limbaugh show. Ha Ha Haaaa. I wonder if they wear tin foil hats?
I would not necessarily call Chris Jansen and Andrea Mitchell right wing jourrnalists but that highlights an interesting point. These journalists are allowed to express 'disapproving' looks at the President's actions without getting crushed by criticism. Mr. Romney cannot or will not express disapproval of ANYTHING his party says and he is the CANDIDATE. Which is closer to your idea of America?
We've had this discussion regarding Andreas politics before, over several days.
Fair enough, but the point is that Chris and Andrea are ALLOWED to express their views and are respected for it. Mr. Romney is AFRAID to express his and he is the LEADER OF THE PARTY (supposedly). Go figure.
Well – it’s an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll not a Gallup Poll - thought we had that corrected last week.
Well – that’s for Independent voters not over all – over all was 54% to 49% - according to the NBC/WSJ poll with a +- error of 3.61% for “likely” voters. Also assumes that a decrease for Obama is automatically an increase for Romney - not that it matters at all either way.
In the dreams of Rasmussen only - even Gallup now admits a 48% to 45% advantage for Obama in their "daily" polls. (You know of course that neither Rasmussen or Gallup's "daily" polls are "daily" or even "polls" - they are actually forecasts.)
Far better to follow RealClearPolitics poll averages - now showing a 3.5 - opps 3.7% Obama lead.
President Obama's job approval rating keeps going up. A year ago it was at about 42-43%. Fit a trend line to RealClearPolitic's poll averages over the past year. Now he is at 49.9%. Gov. Romney's found his approval ratings at around 34% in Nov. 2006, his last year in office. President Bush's ratings for his last months ...
How can President Obama's job approval ratings be going up if support for foreign affairs has fallen 12 points?
Well, foreign policy ranks about 7th in the minds of voters - actually less impressive than that since about 92% of those polled found other things more important.
Couldn't agree more!
Mormon doctrine prior to 1978:
In Mormon theology "a black skin is a mark of the curse of heaven placed upon some portions of mankind" (Juvenile Instructor, vol. 3, p. 157). This idea comes directly from Joseph Smith's Book of Mormon which says that the skins of the Indians became "dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression ..." (Book of Mormon, Alma 3:6). Although Mormon theology has taught that anyone born with a dark skin was inferior, blacks of African lineage were placed at the bottom of the scale.
Bruce R. McConkie, in a book published in 1958: Negroes in this life are denied the priesthood; under no circumstances can they hold this delegation of authority from the Almighty. The gospel message of salvation is not carried affirmatively to them.... Negroes are not equal with other races where the receipt of certain spiritual blessings are concerned ... (Mormon Doctrine, 1958, p. 477).
1969:
The New "Revelation"
The Los Angeles Times for August 27, 1967, carried an article which reported: "The deeply rooted Mormon attitude apparently discriminating against Negroes because of their race is becoming a burning issue in that church—and beyond the church.... The increasing heat of racial pressure in the country has brought it into focus as one of the few uncracked fortresses of discrimination."
1978
For eleven years after the Los Angeles Times published this criticism the Latter-day Saints continued to cling tenaciously to a policy of discrimination. Church leaders claimed that the doctrine could only be changed by revelation from God. Finally, on June 9, 1978 the Mormon church's Deseret News carried a startling announcement by the First Presidency which said that a new revelation had been given and that blacks would be allowed to hold the priesthood:
Its interesting to note, that even though 'black people are now allowed into the priesthood, the doctrine of Cain and the inferiority of blacks is still doctrine of LDS.
Who placed the Negroes originally in darkest Africa? Was it some man, or was it God? And when He placed them there, He segregated them.... The Lord segregated the people both as to blood and place of residence. At least in the cases of the Lamanites and the Negroes we have the definite word of the Lord Himself that He placed a dark skin upon them as a curse—as a punishment and as a sign to all others. He forbade intermarriage with them under threat of extension of the curse. (2 Nephi 5:21) And he certainly segregated the descendants of Cain when He cursed the Negro as to the Priesthood, and drew an absolute line.
I seriously challenge any 'Christian' out there to answer this? - Is Romney a Christian?
I know President Obama is!
Does this apply to my "chocolate milk moustache" as well? Ha Ha Ha!
