What great jobs numbers is Matthews talking about? The jobs numbers are still sluggish and I certainly wouldnt use the word great. Nothing realy changed a whole lot. The biggest way to look is to see if the number of people on food stamps went down last moth. If not then that means the jobs that were addes are low paying and most likely part time seasonal help. We are definatly better off not losing jobs but I dont think the word great is the correct word to use. We still have a long way to go but we are moving forward would be the most honest way to describe it.

Just because we want to have a say in how safe and clean our air, water, land, food and medicine are does not mean we are for socialism.

Just because we do not want to see the demise of systems and programs that have served the citizens of this country so well the last 80 years due to the greed of the 1% does not mean we are for socialism.

One of my biggest frustrations with our conservative commenters is the lack of any words that are useful and reasonable, that may have been stated in reams and reams of electronic postings/comments changing their tone and approach to the room. If you read my posts back in March, I was "moderated" towards the republican position.

Like in today's American life, republican sympathizers concede nothing. We only get to first base and then they run back to batter's position. We do not get to advance the conversation. And, I think it is intentional and deliberate. Just as it is in Washington D.C. and in voter suppression.

Your reasonable, level-headed approach to these boards is sO refreshing, along with several other commenters who should know who they are, that my spirit connects with the words saying, "Yes". That's where we could be in discussion.

The unemployment rate has been calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics the same way it always has. The BLS does not find every unemployed person and every working person and do the arithmetic - that would be a US census EVERY MONTH. This is the only way those numbers can be trusted by policy makers, including Republicans. President Obama came to the table (witness the Republican ideas in the Affordable Care Act) but either Congress kept moving the table or refused to come to the table at all. In spite of this, President Obama still reduced a $1.4 trillion deficit to $1.1 trillion and provide 18 tax breaks to small businesses during a recession, two wars and no cooperation from Congress. The President tries to fix what needs fixing, Mr. Romney wants to go through this all over again in order to send more money to the insurance companies and the 1%. It appears the President knows which is better for the American people.

Furthermore, see the 2009 republican invitation to the newly elected President to come and sitdown with them to converse over the matters before them all.

Then, remember the inaugural night where republican (including Paul Ryan and former speaker Newt Gingrich) pledged together not to support this new president in any of his proposals. (Reminiscent of an oath not to eat or drink until your pledge is completed.)

One thing about finally retiring, there should be jobs opening right? That is a good thing, to make way for the next generation who need jobs and advancement. It also is a signpost for optimism because I would believe that with the stock market way up from four years ago and housing starting to move again, people feel like they can afford to retire.

An observation from having a home in FL during this recession. I noticed after 2009 when the tourists fled in droves. Once again the malls are packed, the restaurants are full, the sports games are sold out... well ok not for the Tampa baseball team but spring training was going fierce and hockey full throttle, there were not mile after mile of houses for sale, beaches crowded and people coming down to retire often where their parents had a place. It seems like the common rank and file have made a decision to move forward again and go back to what they were doing before things crashed.

Second thing that nobody ever talks about is there is always a secondary job market and in bad times, that is where people make "side money". There are tons of barter type and sell on the cheap type opportunities that crop up. Look at E Bay and Craig's list. You can make a pretty penny buying low and selling high, do garage sales and flea markets, dog sit, clean houses and do some child care. Most of this is unreported income. Face it people, none of us are going to be volunteers to sit and starve to death, we become handymen and cupcake bakers, all sorts of creativity blossoms when times are tough.

Lastly in economics, it is always in cycles. An economy as large as ours wil, if at all given some stimulus, get back on track. The big question in my mind is how do you want this country to look, not if we can come back.

Do we want all the people on the top to not pay their fair share of taxes, not a percentage of paid by these people and whine about those who do not pay. As I have said so many times here, get this nation a basic class in the mean, median, and mode factor in statistics. When anything under a Bell Curve is skewed to the degree where the standard of deviation is not mathematically valid, then the arithementic mean score has to be thrown out. What the Republicans are selling is that the top pay a big percentage alas the poor pay nothing and that is so unfair... boo, hoo. Then they justify the more tax cuts to make it more fair, using the mean=arithmetic which is not the true measure of the question and has to be thrown out since it is skewed. If you took five people who made $10 and then one person who made $1 and asked for the average, you can see that dividing $51 by 6, you are not going to get an average of six people that makes any sense. That is an oversimplification of what our Republicans are selling and then those poor folks who make the $10, it is just so unfair.

Why are people so upset that Obama once again is cheating? lol My advice is if you are going to be dealing from the bottom of the deck, don't make it so obvious and wait until right before your election when all of the people who do not understand math are suddenly going to sign up for Kahn....

Speaking of Solar, the local electric membership coop here has just limited the number of their customers who can do what is called net metering to 50, which has already been exceeded. What happens is people install solar systems on their houses and still stay hooked up to the electric grid. If they generate more electric than they use, they sell it back to the electric company. French Broad Electric Membership Coop in this case. This helps the people who put in solar panels pay for them. It also reduces the demand for electricity that the coop has to purchase on the open wholesale market. It is also pollution free, renewable energy - no coal, oil or natural gas is burnt. It also does not have to travel very far to be used by the generator's neighbor. Not nearly as much loss in transmission.

The coop complains that they don't want to change their 71 year old business model to accomadate any more of these individual solar generators. 71 years ago, wasn't that 1941? I got news for the coop: the times they, are a changin' (thank's Mr Dylan). You either need to adapt or go the way of buggy whip manufacturers!

I will remind everyone that it took 7 years of revolution and 4 years of internal wrangling to establish the government we enjoy today. President Obama chose to allow FREE PEOPLES to decide FOR THEMSELVES their own safeguards for their security and happiness. No one wants it to take 11 years for these nations to sort this out but it will not be THEIRS unless they do. The President acted with NATO allies and United Nations approval to stop wholesale slaughter by these dictators but allowed these peoples to EARN their freedom from tyranny instead of force feeding it to them. Those who paid this much for their freedom will not hand it over to tyrants again or try to take it away from other free peoples. President Obama wants nations around the world that earned the right to be called governments of the people, by the people and for the people to be partners in peace so that there are fewer places like Iran or North Korea threatening the peace.

Our choice is this: we can demand the obedience of weak nations or earn the trust of strong ones. Choose wisely.

One more thing to add. The four heroes that died in Benghazi demonstrated that Americans ANYWHERE will devote their lives to bringing a new birth of freedom EVERYWHERE. That birth of freedom must come from peoples who WANT it, not from nations GRANTING it.

How can anyone who is heard speaking with disdain against the 47 percent of ordinary men and women who go to work, pay their just debts and mortgages with not much money left over, who is the head of a political party that openly displays disdain for poor people be trusted to be "in touch" enough to value our children, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends?

Romney is inherently out of touch with the common man who he intends to fight in wars. To be clear, being out of touch is not the problem of the wealthy; it is a problem of those men and women who allow themselves to become arrogant and selfish.

One reason the GOP attacks like this is that they cannot count on the truth FROM EACH OTHER. 'We skew our facts to accomplish our political agenda, why wouldn't they?' Such an attitude and public service do not mix and we must do our best to eliminate this attitude from public service. Don't boo, VOTE.
