Question: Would President Obama be better off if he'd won last week's debate, but then had the jobless rate spike up three-tenths of a point to 8.5? Or is he better off for having lost last week's first debate but seen the jobless rate drop down below 8 percent, down to 7.8 percent?
A political pro will say: go with what you got. You got a bad break on the debate but a great break on the jobless rate. Sell it! Get out there and hit the bricks, buddy. Let the other side talk up last Wednesday night. You get out there and sell what we all got Friday morning.
Reagan got elected with a sun-blazing "morning in america" with a 7.2 percent number. You ought to be able to get soundly re-elected with 7.8 percent. He won 525 electoral votes. All you need to do is get about a bit more than half that: 270.
So it may not be time for a "got it made" attitude like we had before the first debate, but it's a very good time for some sound, solid, professional confidence that by taking the right steps now, going full bore on what you have to sell, you will win this thing.

I shudder to think what is going to happen if Mr. Romney is elected and:
He promises something to Benjamin Netenyahu he cannot deliver without flattening Iran with nuclear weapons.
He gets involved in Syria by backing the 'wrong' set of rebels.
Some environmental disaster occurs resulting from hydraulic fracking in PA or a Deepwater Horizon blowout in ANWR and he does not punish the companies responsible.
He dies in office and President Ryan gets to implement his program.
Vote Obama November 6.

Reagan got elected at 7.2 because he got it down from a terrible Carter rate of over 11%, you really can't compare the two. If the rate has been at 11% when BO took office and got it down to 7.8%, fine, but it was at 7.8% when he took office, rose under him, and now back down. While he may get a blip for that rate, he's going to get taken down some due to the Libya problems. If the election were today, Mitt would walk away with it.

Beginning with the first Obama fiscal year - October 1, 2009 unemployment begins a slow but steady drop following a cyclical pattern. In the past 30 months the unemployment rate has once before dropped .3% in one month and 3 times dropped .2% in a single month. If you observe the graph trend, the 7.8% unemployment figure is not unreasonable. Will it go up and down again - I would expect it to - but I would also expect to follow the general trend that has been in place since October 2009 for a little while before leveling out.

After spending a long day at the Romney barn..... can somebody point me to some information concerning a "fair tax plan"? What I was told is that we are all going to pay only taxes on things we buy and somehow that is going to make it a fair tax since we all pay the same flat rate. I tried to mention that a fair tax is a graduated income tax by our ability to pay with the most financially able paying a little bit more. What shocked me the most was the lack of critical thinking that somehow my grocery money is going to pay for an aircraft carrier or our roads or our educational system. Holy cow, how can anybody believe this nonsense?
I guess we will endure "it is all Barry's fault" and then all of the guilt by association since we seem to be dealing with such uneducated unable to think people who seem willing to believe anything as long as it does not challenge common sense, math, or science... or anything like reality. I was told today that Bush never gave up the hunt for Bin Ladin... and it was "about time" you know, too little too late when Obama got him. Just can't argue with ignorance.

Polls - these polls are relatively small and the CNN 48 to 44 result is within the margin of error. The CBS poll is larger (though still has a large margin of error) and focuses on only undecided voters. Undecided voters are really the most significant target for the debates. In this poll, it was Biden 50% Ryan 31% and 19% declaring a tie. Margin of error was 5% -even so it appears Biden made gains for the President.
Perhaps next week's larger polls will give us a better understanding of the impact (if any) of the debate.
